New install of a Icom 2820H
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:03:16 AM »
OK, now that I have the radio installed, how would I connect to the following local Dstar site?

WS4VA     Stafford     VA     147.37500MHz +0.600     447.27500MHz -5.000     1282.20000MHz -12.000     1298.40000MHz

I have the following configured in the radio.

UR = CQCQCQCQ
RPT1=WS4VA/B
RPT2=WS4VA/C
MY=KE4IAP/Don

Am on the right track?  If not please assist.

Thank you,
KE4IAP - Don

If you are using 440 MHz, RPT1 must be set to WS4VA  B (2 spaces between callsign and 'B').  If you want to access the gateway (to talk to other repeater systems or make use of D-PRS or DPlus(linking)), RPT2 must be set to WS4VA  G (2 spaces between callsign and 'G').  If you want to cross-band to 2m, replace the 'G' in RPT2 with a 'C'.

Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity what are your settings right of this minute?

Set it up like this to see if you can talk to the local node:

70 centimeters
Frequency: 447.27500MHz -5.000
MY: KE4IAP   (Note: don't add the /Don here.  You can append it in a message field, but just leave your call here)
URCALL: CQCQCQ (not CQCQCQCQ)
RPT1: WS4VA<space><space>B
RPT2: WS4VA<space><space>G

2 meters (changes in bold)
Frequency: 147.37500MHz +0.600
MY: KE4IAP
URCALL: CQCQCQ (not CQCQCQCQ)
RPT1: WS4VA<space><space>C
RPT2: WS4VA<space><space>G

Input what you have there and still nothing.  Could the local repeater be down?  Would I get some sort of beep letting me know I'm hitting the repeater?

Nope, it's not down.  There was activity on it today:

http://www.dstarusers.org/viewrepeater.php?system=WS4VA

If you look at the bottom, you can see who's been on it and when.

You might want to get with the Stafford guy's and see what's going on.

It seems that no where does it state that you need to register onto the DStar network to be able to use it.  I've been told!

Quote
I ask the following, not knowing if you are already affiliated with or have been registered as a DStar user through SARA or another ham association?  All of our DStar users had to be registered in the DStar system before it would recognize us.  It’s a one-time registration into the system and will recognize users thereafter regardless of where they travel.  Rich (N0RMC) handles our DStar registration.

As most ham associations with DStar capability are presently doing, we enacted a DStar User Account/Registration Policy to prevent abuses of the system, since some are now accessing DStar repeaters via Dongle.  I’ve attached a copy of our April newsletter which outlines the policy on the top of page 5.  Some of the local associations such as Bull Run were receiving requests for registration from several states away!

Don,

I was advised of your predicament by N5EBW.  Here are some answers and comments:

1. The 447.275 repeater works fine.  The antenna is at 125 feet, so its not very high given the distance from your QTH.
2. To talk on the 2m repeater, QSY to 145.320 (-).  This is the new coordinated frequency.
3. You are not a registered D-STAR user (I just checked the D-STAR server database), so you will not be able to leave the gateway (any gateway, not just ours).  You will be able to use the repeaters locally.  Email me direct and I will tell you how to register.

So, to talk on 2m set your radio as follows:

UR: CQCQCQ
RPT1: WS4VA _ _ C [the _ are spaces]
RPT2:
MY: KE4IAP

To talk on 447.275, QSO change the WS4VA _ _ C to WS4VA _ _ B.  You won't be able to use the gateway (WS4VA _ _ G in RPT2) until you register.

SARA has a Thursday night D-STAR net at 1930 hours locally on 145.320 if you care to join us.

Does this not mean I'm registered? If I've got in on W4HFH's connection.

Can you get out on his Gateway?  As far as I can tell you are not registered.  Yes, you can still use his and any other D-STAR repeater like a conventional repeater.  But unless registered, your signal cannot leave his repeater through the gateway (internet) to another repeater ... whether its ours here in Stafford or a VK repeater in Australia.  So when I link the WS4VA _ _ C repeater to the W4HFH _ _ C repeater and some of those hams and I have a QSO, you will be able to hear us all, be able to reply to the local guys, but be unable to reply back to me in Stafford through the gateway.

Man am I confused, if I have to register then why doesn't anyone provide registration URL's, The W4HFH website has a registration on line I thought was used to register for access to DStar.  Am I to assume not?

Don,

My apologies for not getting back sooner.  I don't check these threads regularly.  If you want a faster response email me direct.

If you registered on the W4HFH site, then you should be ok.  Try connecting to someone outside that repeater, via the gateway.  If that doesn't work email and we'll try to figure out what's wrong.
