After further investigation, I had created several entries using the RPTR-L function, which is really just a load memory function. When you have a RPTR-L (list) and push the DV button, you jump to the entries created (from the keypad) using the RPTR-L function. I've not fully deciphered the operation, but I believe that when in DV mode, it is difficult to alter the callsigns.
The two choices seem to be:
1 - (Least flexible configuration)
While in VFO mode, use the RPTR-L function to create a memory entry for EXACTLY what you want. Now enter DV mode (using the DV button) and don't attempt to alter the callsign settings while in DV mode. (Yes the RPTR-L is editable, but it is editing memory, not the current live configuration)
2 - (More flexible configuration)
While in VFO mode, enter the freq, SET THE MODE to DV by pushing the MODE button repeatedly (FM, FM-N...DV), set offset, +/-, callsigns as usual for D*. This will get you going on D*. Now if you want to edit the current callsigns, you can make changes without fighting with the memories. Do NOT push the DV button as this will change from VFO to DV memory mode).
I was traveling and trying to use the DV mode button, which apparently prohibits making changes to the callsigns.
I wanted to figure this out as understanding this is necessary to successful operation while away from a PC and programming cable.
