I have a icom  id-1 and I have read the book and manuals that are on the internet and I still can't get it to work with the internet and a
laptop, any ideals?

Do you have the CS?  I so use the help screen and make sure you turn on the digital mode for the D-STAR frequencies.  You may also want to check out the following site:  http://www.DSTARINFO.com/faq/FirstSteps.htm
