Help with Failed Registration!
« on: June 07, 2010, 07:23:56 PM »
I've run into a problem while trying to register for D-Star Access.
First, I found W3EOC D-Star Repeater located in Chester PA that is close to my location.  Using the following link  https://w3eoc.dstargateway.org/Dstar.

This got me to the registration site and I followed the instructions, entering my call, email, name, etc. and after submitting it, I got a JAVA Scripting Error and now I am unsure if the registration went through.  I have waited about 4 hours trying each hour to login but keep getting this in RED Letters: "ERROR!! : The registration of this CallSign not approved !"

Does this mean that it has my info that was submitted and is just not approved, or does it mean that my info did not get into the system to be approved?  Is there anyway to check as I understand that trying to register again can cause issues so I don't want to do a second registration until someone in the know tells me to go and do it again.  I believe that the error may have been caused by my Explorer Pop-up Blocker.

I'm hopping my registration info did get posted to the server to be approved.
I registered on W3EOC registration server at this link: https://w3eoc.dstargateway.org/Dstar.do

My Info used to register:  AA3JC, Joseph Caltabiano, jp.calt@verizon.net

Thanks in advanced for the Help!!!

If it says "not approved", you're OK so far.
Just wait for the local administrator approves it.

Welcome to the FUN!

Thanks Jim!

Thanks for the FAST reply!

That is good news!

I'm looking forward to getting up and running as we have a number of D-Star Repeaters around my area, and our EOC for Montgomery County has recently installed a D-Star system and they just await approval of the repeater freq before they turn it on!

Jim,  I had just prior to posting this had sent an email to a email address I found on W3EOC website.  I already got an email back from him that he had forwarded my message to the person who takes care of the D-Star registration server so I expect that my issue should get resolved fairly quickly!  Thanks for your help and info with this problem!

Ok, here it is 3 days later, and my registration has STILL NOT BEEN APPROVED....... I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER AND ABOUT READY TO RETURN THE RIG AS IT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A USELESS PAPER WEIGHT AT THIS MOMENT.

I understand that people have real time jobs, but...this is nuts.  I'm hearing this everywhere on the fourms.

I think that Icom AND D-Star Repeater Admins should rethink the process and create a registration site that is automated and does a lookup in the FCC database and approves it based on that.  I spent almost $1,000 including the UT-123 module and I AM PISSED THAT I CANT USE IT.

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY THAT IS MORE TIMELY.  Something for ICOM and D-Star Groups to consider fixing now before the masses start buying these units.  What will they do when many more people are trying to register when for the few that are now can't get on line in a reasonable amount of time.

IS THERE A SITE I CAN REGISTER NOW, AND GET ON WITH THIS PROCESS AND NOT WAIT FOR DAYS OR WEEKS FOR SOMEONE TO GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND PRESS A SIMPLE BUTTON???????  Otherwise I'am going to return it and forget it.

Joe,

1) I know you're frustrated, believe me, but I'm also quite sure that no one will be willing to help you with that attitude.  You're not bringing anything to light that hasn't been well stated before.

2) If you really want to put some feelers out and talk on the local node.  You don't need gateway access to do that:

Freq: 146.49000MHz +1.000
RPT1: W3EOC<space><space>C

- or -
Freq:445.06875MHz -5.000
RPT1: W3EOC<space><space>B

MYCALL: AA3JC
URCALL: CQCQCQ

That will most certainly put you in touch with someone more local than anything we can do for you here.

Good Hunting,

-Eric

Just an update and a word to the wise (this did not apply to me as I was too much in a hurry to get thru the registration process so I could talk via linking / reflectors etc.)  Any way, AES came to my rescue and set me up on their server the next day!  Now everything seemed fine but thats where it ends.

About a week ago I get an email from the server admin of the first server I registered on that they completed my registration.  Now I am registered on two servers and guess what, now I cant talk beyond my local D-Star repeater!!  I was lucky to stumble into Dave K3KTO (sorry Dave if I got it wrong) who is mostly on Reflector 20 A or B from New Jersey.  He did some checking and found that my problems now were the dual registration.

I had to send an email to the first server admin I had tried to register with to now remove my registration from their system.  Well less than 24 hours later, I get an email that it was removed and within hours I was back working the reflectors again.

Key thing I learned and want to pass on is this:  DONT DO LIKE ME AND REGISTER ON TWO SERVERS.  HAVE SOME PATIENCE......IT WILL TAKE LONGER TO UNDO THE PROBLEM YOU JUST CREATED FOR YOURSELF!! (AND THE SERVER ADMIN WHO HAS TO FIX IT NOW)!!!!

MY SUGGESTION IS THIS, IF YOU ARE ORDERING YOUR ICOM D-STAR FROM ONE OF THE BIG 2 RETAILERS, THEY HAVE THEIR OWN D-STAR REPEATERS AND REGISTRATION.  AS PART OF YOUR PURCHASE, ASK THEM TO REGISTER YOU IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME WITH D-STAR. THINK ABOUT IT, THEY HAVE ALL YOUR INFO IN THEIR RETAIL SYSTEMS BY VIA YOUR CALL ANYWAY! AND YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF LOTS OF PAIN! BEST OF ALL, BY THE TIME YOU GET THE RIG YOU CAN HAVE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS COMPLETED AND OUT OF THE WAY.

IM NOW HAVING A BLAST WITH D-STAR YOU WILL TOO!

The problem is compounded by the fact that there appears to be no easy way to see if one is registered.  For example, Icom was supposed to register me, but I don't know if the registration is still current, as I think they are no longer in the business of registering users.  As a result, I tried to register AE7Q with (first) w4aes.dstarusers.org, and then k7lwh.dstarusers.org.  Both show that I'm not approved yet ... perhaps I'll have to undo one or both of those.

As I understand part of the process, when one registers a callsign, one is assigned an IP address (I have that, 10.103.135.193), so I presume (hope?) that there is a domain name somewhere that maps callsigns to IP addresses?  If so, knowing such a domain name would be helpful for lookups.

Update:  Yes, there is: http://query.ki4swy.org/

Update:  Yep!  I'm still registered at N7IH, so both registrations failed w/ nice eMails.  After deleting my registration at N7IH, I'll re-register again with K7LWH (where I can more easily maintain my registration info).

Wow that was fast, and on a Sunday, too!  I got someone to contact the N7IH admin and delete my registration there, and register me at K7LWH.
