Suggestions for a gateway computer
« on: May 10, 2008, 10:36:19 AM »
I would like to know what is being used as the G2 gateway computer. I am ready to buy one and would like to know what has worked well for others?

I would like it to be rack mounted.

Thanks

We purchased a couple of different rack mounted computers from Tiger Direct.  They were priced where we could afford them.  Select carefully however.  On the third computer it had an Asus motherboard, and the on-board Ethernet card would not work under Linux.  They have half way decent tech support so you can ask before you buy.

You will have to add an additonal Network Interface Card into the computer, try to get a card which uses the RealTech chip set.

If you need assistance don't hesitate to ask.

I have had good luck with used HP/Compaq Proliants off EBay.  Driver support is rarely a problem, except on VERY new models.  Just make certain that you get one WITH rack rails -- new rack rails are frequently more expensive than the used server!  Redundant power supplies and at least two disk drives (mirrored) are great!
